Small Businesses are Missing a Great Deal of Commerce from the Online Market!

It was only yesterday that the Independent released a story about how small businesses in the UK are missing out on billions of pounds worth of mobile shopping. The reason? Because their websites aren’t optimised for mobile users.

Shoppers are predicted to double the amount they spend on their mobile devices to a staggering £27bn this year. The figure is expected to continue growing, so much so that by 2020, the figure could stand at £43bn. When you consider these projected figures and compare them to the results of PayPal’s survey – which showed only 18% of small businesses in the UK owning a mobile-friendly site – small businesses could be missing out on a great deal of work and custom.

Why are small businesses abandoning their online presence?

In this day and age, having an online presence is pivotal to your success. Whatever your business provides or specialises within, having a website will still benefit you. If not for selling products, then at least spreading awareness and providing more contact options for your potential clients.

Lack of understanding for mobile shopping.

One of the reasons that businesses are not focussed on mobile sales is because they don’t understand the importance of having a mobile-friendly website to conduct business.

Who needs a mobile-friendly site?

33% of respondents said that they don’t need a mobile website because they “do well enough as it is.” But one of the biggest frustrations for consumers is websites that aren’t fit for mobile browsing.

Losing the younger generations.

44% of 16-25 year olds say they plan to buy more online by using their mobile. Six in ten millennials said they search for potential buys on their mobile every day!

Payment options.

Although 70% of small firms have an online payment system, there are still half of companies that rely on cash, and 45% say cheque payments are important.
